Origin and history
The bishopric of Saint-Flour was founded in 1317, first settling in the castle of Brezons (XI century), the walls of which remain of the present hall, vaulted in 1376. This medieval site marked the institutional beginnings of the bishopric, before its radical transformation in modern times.
In the 17th century, architect Jean Le Noir led the construction of a new episcopal palace, replacing the dilapidated medieval structures. The building adopts a classical style, while in the next century a neoclassical courtyard is added, framed by a monumental portal, symbolizing the episcopal prestige of the era.
Inside, the four-core staircase, the stone balustrade and original woodwork testify to the past. The episcopal chapel, decorated with a 19th century painted ceiling inspired by the Italian Renaissance, combines local landscapes with historical figures. These sets illustrate the artistic evolution of the place, between medieval heritage and classical influences.
Ranked a historic monument in 2001, the building now houses the town hall and the Musée de la Haute-Auvergne, preserving its dual heritage and civic vocation. The protection concerns the entire building, including the chapel, staircase and 18th century living room, highlighting its architectural and historical importance.
The episcopal palace embodies the changes of Saint-Flour, from its medieval religious role to its contemporary administrative function. Its hybrid architecture — between Gothic remains and neoclassical additions — reflects the historical strata of the city and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
