Origin and history

Bataville is an industrial and urban complex founded in 1931 by Tomáš Ba This site, unique in France, is part of a series of Bata cities scattered around the world, combining architectural modernity (inspired by Bauhaus) and social paternalism. Industrial buildings, standardized and aligned along a central avenue, are alongside an autonomous working-class town with collective facilities (schools, swimming pool, church, shops), reflecting a desire for hygiene and social control.

The construction of Bataville from the 1930s to the 1970s, marked by expansion phases (the 1950s with the sports hall) and local resistances, such as the anti-Bata law of 1936 limiting its development. After the war, the site was modernizing, but the closure of the factory in 2001 — resulting in the loss of 840 jobs — caused a social and media shock, immortalized by documentaries (e.g. Not a step without Bata, 2003). Since then, the site has been partially converted into a logistics platform and ephemeral reception of cultural initiatives, such as the University of the Forest in 2016.

The architecture of Bataville is distinguished by its industrial buildings made of concrete and brick (5 floors, aligned windows) and its workers' pavilions with flat roofs, designed to avoid attices deemed unhealthy. The city, labeled 20th Century Heritage, is bordered by a medieval pond and forests, integrating nature and work. Two elements are classified as historical monuments in 2014: the canteen (social home) and a factory building, symbols of this progressive and authoritarian utopia.

Bataville's decline began in the 1980s with the destruction of the old city, and the final closure in 2002, after a century marked by tensions between industrial modernization and social preservation. Today, the site embodies a controversial heritage, between worker memory and economic conversion, while remaining a rare testimony of factory cities in Europe. His history is documented by books (Bataville (1931-2001), PU Grenoble, 2023) and films (Welcome to Bataville, 2008).
