The former hotel of the White Cross known as the former coach relay, sis 14-16 rue Bisson, with the right-of-way of the plot and the two houses in full, appearing in the cadastre section AB No. 182, 183, 184, 709: inscription by order on 10 June 2020
Origin and history
The former coach relay, also known as the White Cross Hotel, is an emblematic building in Guémené-sur-Scorff, Brittany. This building, designed to accommodate passengers and their couplings, is characterized by a wide porch overlooking a paved inner courtyard. Its cut stone façade, decorated with gargoyles and surmounted by fire pots, reflects the utilitarian and decorative architecture of the postal relays of the time. Together, the key role of these infrastructures in pre-rail transport networks is illustrated.
The hotel was listed as historic monuments on 10 June 2020, recognizing its heritage value. Located at 14-16 rue Bisson, it comprises two houses and a cadastral parcel preserved in their entirety (section AB, plots 182 to 184 and 709). Although the sources do not specify its date of construction, its style and function suggest an origin related to the rise of the stages of the 18th or 19th centuries, when Guémené-sur-Scorff, like other Breton villages, served as a stage on commercial roads.
The relay is part of a regional context marked by transport and trade activity. In Brittany, coach relays played a major economic and social role, facilitating the movement of people, mail and goods. Their decline from the mid-19th century coincided with the arrival of the railway, which made these stages obsolete. Today, the former White Cross hotel bears witness to this story, while remaining an architectural landmark in the centre of Guémené-sur-Scorff.
