Iron cross forged, at the corner of the public square, at the entrance of the village: inscription by decree of 27 September 1948
Origin and history
La Croix de Montolieu is a wrought iron cross located in the commune of the same name, in the department of Aude, in the region of Occitanie. This monument, dating from the 16th century, is characterized by a structure where the vertical rise and the arms are connected by four arcs of circle with opposite convexities, forming a curvilinear square. Decorative elements include curved petal sheet flowers and stylized lilies at the ends, as well as a central stem to support floral offerings. These artistic details reflect a remarkable metallurgical know-how for the time.
The cross has been listed as historic monuments since September 27, 1948, recognizing its heritage value. It is located at the corner of the public square, at the entrance of the village of Montolieu, probably marking a gathering place or symbolic point in the village. Its location and its design suggest a function both religious and community, typical of the urban or rural crosses of this period.
The materials used, such as square irons for upholstery and arms, or flat irons for arcs, as well as floral motifs in sheet metal, illustrate a sober yet elaborate aesthetic. The precision of the decorative elements, such as the sheaths of bows or lily flowers, shows particular attention to ornamentation. These characteristics make it a notable example of the art of wrought iron in the 16th century in the south of France.
Depending on available sources, the exact location of the cross is estimated as "passable" (note 5/10), with an approximate address at 14 Rue du Collège. This monument belongs to the municipality of Montolieu and remains accessible in the public space, although its current use (cultual, memorial or tourist) is not specified in the documents consulted.
Registration for historic monuments in 1948 helped preserve this heritage, stressing its local and regional importance. The Montolieu cross is part of a wider set of similar monuments in the Aude, reflecting the religious and artisanal history of this part of Occitanie. His study sheds light on the artistic practices and beliefs of the modern era in Languedoc.
Finally, sources mention a Creative Commons license for associated photographs, indicating a contemporary interest in the documentation and enhancement of this heritage. The cross, by its simplicity and elegance, continues to symbolize the link between the past and the present in the urban landscape of Montolieu.
