Forged iron cross: inscription by decree of 31 January 1927

Origin and history

The wrought iron cross of Saint-Félix-Lauragais is an emblematic monument of the eighteenth century, located in the department of Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. Installed in Place des Halles, it was classified as Historic Monument by order of 31 January 1927, highlighting its heritage and artistic value. This type of cross, often erected in public spaces, served as both a visual marker and a religious symbol for the inhabitants.

In the 18th century, the Lauragais region was marked by a rural economy, centred on agriculture and local trade. The wrought iron crosses, like that of Saint-Félix-Lauragais, played a social and spiritual role, punctuating the squares or crossroads. Their presence reflected the importance of the Christian faith in everyday life, while illustrating the talent of local blacksmiths, able to work this demanding material.

The location of the cross, Place des Halles, suggests a link with the commercial activity of the city, this square being traditionally a place of assembly and exchange. Today, the monument belongs to the municipality and remains accessible to the public, although its original use has evolved. Its protection in 1927 is a testament to the desire to preserve this heritage, representative of crafts and local history.
