Origin and history

The prehistoric enclosure of the Fourasse, located in Champigneulles en Meurthe-et-Moselle, is an archaeological vestige dating from the Prehistory and more precisely from the Iron Age. This site, surrounded by a 100 metre wooded perimeter, was classified as a Historical Monument by ministerial decree on 16 September 1923. It illustrates the techniques of fortification and spatial organization of protohistoric communities in this region of the Great East.

The location of the enclosure, indicated with an accuracy considered "very satisfactory" (note 8/10), corresponds to address 16 La Fourasse in the commune of Champigneulles. The site now belongs to the municipality. Although available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not detail its exact use at the Iron Age, this type of structure suggests a defensive or community function, typical of protohistoric establishments in temperate Europe.

Current data do not indicate whether the site is open to the public or offers services such as guided tours. Its ranking in 1923, however, underscores its heritage importance, linked to the preservation of the material traces of pre-Roman societies. The Lorraine region, now integrated in the East, has other similar remains, reflecting a dense human occupation during the Protohistory.
