Origin and history

The Parish Enclosure of Guimiliau, located in Finistère in Brittany, is an emblematic architectural ensemble of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It consists of the church of Saint-Miliau, an ossuary, a blue granite calvary (1581-1586) and a triumphal gate, all classified as historical monuments. This site illustrates the Breton religious art of the Renaissance, mixing local and Spanish influences, visible in the costumes of the 80 characters carved on the Calvary.

The triumphal door, called Porz ar maro ("door of death" in Breton), marked the entrance to the cemetery and was closed by a gate, open only at weddings and burials. It is surmounted by two riders. The Calvary, considered the most populated of Brittany by Eugène Royer, represents scenes of Christ's life as well as local episodes, such as the legend of Catel Collet, condemned for stealing a hostie.

The 16th century church of Saint-Miliau has a glazed nave and a rectangular bedside decorated with a glass of the Passion. The ossuary, backed by the southern porch, and the circular sacristy (1683) complete this ensemble, a witness to the religious architecture of Lower Britain. The calvary, with its bas-reliefs and statues (including Saint Miliau), also reflects the tensions of the League's wars, when Spanish soldiers were present in Brittany.

The enclosure inspired the arts, as evidenced by its representation on a stained glass window of the Paris-Saint-Lazare station (1928-1930) by Charles Sarteur. This window, among 114 others, celebrates the western destinations of the capital. The ensemble of Guimiliau remains a major example of Breton parish enclosures, combining religious, artistic and memorial functions.

Ranked a historic monument since 1906 (church, chapel Sainte-Anne, Calvary) and 1914 (arch of triumph), the enclosure is now owned by the commune of Guimilieu. His ordeal, with his detailed scenes and period costumes, offers a unique testimony of beliefs and social life in Brittany during the Renaissance.
