Origin and history
The castral complex of Saint-Rémy-du-Val is one of the most imposing fortresses in Maine, covering an area of more than four hectares. This site is distinguished by the extent of its entrenchments and the presence of one of the largest circular towers of the kingdom, built in the late twelfth or early thirteenth century. Some elements, such as the early defensive structures, date back even to the early 11th century, reflecting an early and strategic occupation.
The fortress illustrates medieval military architecture, with ditches, lifts and a low courtyard protecting the built elements, some still buried. These features are a remarkable example of the evolution of defence technology between the 11th and 13th centuries. The site was listed as a Historic Monument by order of December 22, 2015, recognizing its exceptional heritage value.
Today, the castral complex is shared between the communal property and private owners. Its location, specified at 8 Rue du Dauphin in Saint-Rémy-du-Val (Sarthe), makes it a major historical point of interest in the Pays de la Loire. The accuracy of its geographical location is assessed as satisfactory, facilitating its study and preservation.
