Origin and history

The Jas des Terres de Roux is a traditional pastoral building located in the commune of Redortiers, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. Built according to local dry stone technique, it illustrates the agropastoral architecture typical of the region, designed to house herds and shepherds during summer transhumances. This set includes a sheepfold, a shepherd's cabin, a cistern and an enclosure, reflecting a spatial organization adapted to the needs of pastoral life.

Jas was registered as historic monuments by order of 28 May 1993, thereby recognizing its heritage value. This protection covers all the constituent elements (bergery, cabin, tank and enclosure), demonstrating the importance attached to the preservation of vernacular constructions related to traditional agricultural activities. The precise location of the site, although documented in official bases such as Mérimée, remains approximate according to available sources, with cartographic accuracy assessed as satisfactory a priori.

In the wider historical context, jas (or jasses in Occitan) were essential infrastructures for the pastoral economy of Provence, allowing seasonal management of herds between valleys and heights. These structures, often isolated, played a central role in the social and economic organization of rural communities, where sheep and goat farming was a major resource. Their preservation today offers a material testimony of agro-pastoral practices that have shaped landscapes and lifestyles in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
