Terraces and gardens known as gardens of the Cross of Jerusalem (all) (Box AB 39, 41): by order of 6 September 1928
Origin and history
The gardens of the Cross of Jerusalem are a set of terraces and gardens located at Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy. This monument, classified by ministerial decree on September 6, 1928, is part of the historical landscape of the Mount, famous for its medieval abbey and unique architecture. Their precise location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), places near the Grande Rue, in the heart of the fortified village.
The absence of precise historical details in the available sources does not allow to trace their exact origin or function. However, their classification among the Historical Monuments highlights their heritage value, linked to the development of green spaces in a monastic and defensive context. These gardens could reflect medieval or post-medieval horticultural practices, adapted to the topographical constraints of the rock.
Their preservation contributes to the presentation of Mont-Saint-Michel, a major site of French and tourist heritage.
