Origin and history

The parish complex Sainte-Thérèse de Nantes, built between 1933 and 1961, is a notable example of 20th century religious architecture. It consists of a Romano-Byzantine-style church, a presbytery and a school (Sainte-Agnès and Saint-Théophane Vénard), all designed in a homogeneous style using mainly red brick. The church, whose first stone was laid in 1935, suffered partial destruction during the 1943 bombings and was completed in the 1950s. Its campanile, originally planned to reach 70 meters, finally peaks at 23 meters.

The creation of this parish was in response to the growing urbanization of the north-west quarter of Nantes. Father Louis Larose, the first parish priest, inspired the project after a pilgrimage to Lisieux, dedicating the church to Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus. Architects René Ménard and Maurice Ferré, assisted by sculptor Jean Fréour and master glassmaker Gabriel Loire, designed a concrete building with brick walls of Beauvais and granite columns. The official consecration took place in 1960, marking the culmination of decades of work interrupted by the war.

The ensemble, inscribed in the historical monuments in 2011, reflects a pivotal period in the history of Nantes, mixing architectural modernity and religious tradition. The adjacent school group, enlarged in the 1960s-70s, completes this coherent urban project, typical of the city's extensions in the 20th century. The materials used, such as brick and local granite, anchor the monument in its territory while testifying to the constructive innovations of the time.

The hazards of construction, including the destructions of 1943, illustrate the challenges encountered during the Second World War. Canon Larose, the central figure of the project, played a social role in redistributing the church materials to the victims of the neighbourhood. This human dimension adds heritage value to the whole, which combines religious, educational and collective memory functions.

Today, the church houses remarkable works, such as Christ in the glory of Jean Fréour (1958), and stained glass by Gabriel Loire. Its inscription as a historical monument underlines its importance in the architectural and cultural landscape of Nantes. The stylistic homogeneity of the whole, despite the extended construction phases, makes it a rare testimony of the religious urbanism of the twentieth century in the Pays de la Loire.
