Origin and history
Kerveguen Warehouse, also known as Kerveguen Store or Roussin House, is a former warehouse located in Saint-Pierre, on the island of La Réunion. Built probably in the 1830s-1840s by Gabriel Le Coat de Kerveguen, then a merchant, it dominates the river of Abord in the city centre. Its architecture, unique in the neighborhood, reflects the intense commercial activity of the colonial era.
Ranked a historic monument since March 3, 1995, the building has been rehabilitated to accommodate, since 2000, the seat of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF). Its exact location, at 1 boulevard Hubert-Delisle, makes it a major heritage landmark of Saint-Pierre, owned by the commune.
The building illustrates the economic role of colonial warehouses in the 19th century, related to maritime trade and the storage of goods. Its inclusion in the inventory of historical monuments underlines its architectural value and its importance in local history, despite a GPS location deemed mediocre (precision 5/10).
