Origin and history

The Berchères-les-Pierres wind turbine is a Bollée wind turbine, designed by Auguste Bollée from a patent filed in 1885. This type of wind turbine, typical of the late nineteenth century, was intended for agricultural or domestic uses, such as water supply. It was installed after the drought of 1896 to meet local needs, especially to feed a public wash.

This wind turbine is identical to Nogent-le-Phaye, highlighting the standardization of Bollée constructions. It is located in the department of Eure-et-Loir, in the Centre-Val de Loire region, and was registered as historical monuments by order of 10 May 1993. Its site, including the pump, shelter, washhouse and basin, is protected for its heritage interest.

The wind turbine illustrates the technical innovation of the time, combining renewable energy and collective utility. It also demonstrates the challenges of water management in rural areas, particularly during drought episodes. Today, it remains a remarkable example of the industrial and technical heritage of the late 19th century.
