Gallo-Roman Barred Eperon (Case 14 135, 147): inscription by order of 24 December 1991

Origin and history

The Gallo-Roman barred spur of Mondorff is a historical monument located in the commune of Mondorff, Moselle (57), in the Grand East region. This archaeological site, typical of the Gallo-Roman fortifications, bears witness to the occupation and defensive strategies put in place during this period. It has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1991, highlighting its heritage importance and legal protection.

Barred spurs were defensive structures often built on natural reliefs, such as rocky spurs, to control access and protect against invasions. In the Gallo-Roman era, the region, then integrated into the Roman Gaul, was marked by a structured social and military organization. Fortifications such as Mondorff served both as shelters for local populations and as strategic monitoring points. These sites reflect the adaptation of Roman defence techniques to the geographical peculiarities of the conquered territories.

The Mondorff site was officially recognized and protected by a registration order dated 24 December 1991. This protection specifically covers cadastral plots 14 135 and 147, indicating a precise delimitation of the archaeological perimeter. The location of the monument, although known with an accuracy deemed 'a priori satisfactory' (note of 6/10), remains a point of interest for researchers and local history enthusiasts. The site is now owned by the municipality of Mondorff, which facilitates its management and preservation for future generations.
