15th century carved cross: by decree of 1 September 1922
Origin and history
The carved cross of Nouhant is a stone monument erected in the 15th century, located on the public square near the church of the village. Its octagonal base has a niche and a shield, while the barrel, nerved and adorned with prismatic bases, supports a finely cut cross. The faces of the cross bear in relief Christ in crocifixion on one side, and on the other, the Virgin holding the Child Jesus, illustrating a religious iconography typical of medieval times.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 1 September 1922, this cross belongs to the commune of Nouhant, in the department of Creuse (New Aquitaine region). Its initial location on the Church Square suggests a central role in the community and spiritual life of the village. Architectural details, such as small gables and pinnacles, reflect the local craftsmanship and stylistic influences of the late Middle Ages.
The location of the cross, although documented (address: Place de l'Église or 10 Rue Saint-Martin), is considered to be of poor accuracy (note of 5/10). This type of monument, common in the French countryside, often served as a religious landmark and assembly place for the inhabitants. Its ranking in 1922 reflects its heritage value and the desire to preserve this testimony of limousine sacred art.
