Origin and history

The statue of Napoleon in Brienne-le-Château is a work by the sculptor Louis Rochet, made in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. She represented Napoleon Bonaparte at the age of 15, in uniform at the Brienne military school, where he studied from May 1779 to October 1784. The original plaster is preserved at the Malmaison, while several bronze replicas were installed, including that of Brienne-le-Château, located in front of the eastern façade of the town hall.

The statue and the town hall were built under Napoleon III between 1855 and 1859, in an architectural project entrusted to Garrel. The ensemble was inaugurated on 29 May 1859. This monument commemorates Napoleon's training in this city, where he received military education before his exceptional career. The statue, with its base and exhedron, as well as parts of the town hall, were listed as historical monuments by order of 28 June 1995.

Brienne-le-Château, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, keeps an artistic and historical testimony related to Napoleon's youth. The precise location of the statue is the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, where it remains accessible to the public. This monument illustrates the symbolic importance of Brienne in Napoleonic memory, while reflecting the tributes paid to the emperor under the Second Empire.

The statue, owned by the municipality, is part of a larger architectural complex, including the town hall, which was designed to highlight this heritage. Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a historical monument and its role in enhancing the link between Napoleon and Brienne-le-Château.
