Origin and history
Estoublon Public Clock is an iconic monument located in the town of Estoublon, in the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Built during the first quarter of the 18th century, it is located on the side of the so-called Saint John hill. This type of public clock played a central role in the daily life of the villages, allowing the inhabitants to synchronize their agricultural, religious and social activities.
The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 27 October 1941. This official recognition underscores its heritage and architectural importance. The clock is now owned by the municipality of Estublon, which shows its anchoring in the local heritage and its preservation for future generations.
In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in the 18th century, public clocks were often placed in visible places, such as hillsides or central squares, to be accessible to all. They symbolized technical progress and collective organization, reflecting the growing importance of measuring time in rural societies of the time.
