Origin and history
The Pommer bath establishment, located in Avignon in the Vaucluse, was built in 1891 under the direction of Auguste Pommer, master contractor, and the contractor Daruty. This building, emblematic of the late 19th century, operated as a public bath until 1972, the date of its decommissioning. It was declared a historic monument on 31 March 1992 for its architecture and social role.
In 2017, the municipality of Avignon studied a purchase project to preserve this heritage. Since June 20, 2025, the property has been transformed into a municipal museum, accessible free of charge, like all museums in the city. It preserves original elements, including 1930 baths, and extends over 500 m2, including a garden and 12 apartments.
The building, located at 68 Philonarde Street, illustrates the evolution of hygiene and social practices in Avignon. Its regular maintenance, despite its prolonged closure, allowed its conservation until its reopening as a cultural place. DRAC PACA files and photographic archives document its history and architecture, providing a valuable resource for researchers and the public.
