The dovecote: inscription by decree of 6 November 1929

Origin and history

La Ferme du Colombier is a monument located in the commune of Etigny, in the department of l'Yonne (89), in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. This site is mainly known for its dovecote, an architectural element typical of Burgundy farms, often associated with agricultural or seigneurial properties. The inscription of this dovecote in the inventory of Historical Monuments by decree of 6 November 1929 underlines its heritage importance, although details of its origin or precise historical use remain little documented in the available sources.

The doves, in the rural Burgundy context, traditionally served to raise pigeons, a food resource and a symbol of social status. In medieval and modern times, their possession was often reserved for wealthy landowners or lords, reflecting a marked social hierarchy. In Yonne, as in other agricultural regions, these structures frequently accompanied farms or estates, playing a practical and symbolic role in community life.

Their preservation today offers a material testimony of these ancestral practices.
