Origin and history

The former farm of the pre-demonstrated abbey of Bucilly is a major vestige of the abbey of the same name, whose importance rivalled that of Saint-Michel-en-Thiérache before the French Revolution. At its peak, the abbey was organized around a central church and claustral buildings, surrounded by communes and a farm set around a river. The doorway, made of brick and stone, marked the west entrance of the whole and housed housing, with a monumental door in the middle of the hangar. This building underwent transformations in the 19th century, including the addition of brick wings and the closure of the central passageway.

The farm, still well preserved, consisted of two large barns, an access porch (now gone), a square building and a farm body organized around a courtyard. A large 18th century vaulted cellar, divided into eight or nine spans, extends under the buildings. The whole, including the facades, roofs, frames and cellar, was inscribed in the historical monuments by order of 2 November 2009. The plans of 1784 attest to the initial order of the premises, before their post-revolutionary dismantling.

Today, the farm and gate are the only remaining remains of this abbey, whose fence walls once surrounded all the buildings. These elements illustrate the religious and agricultural architecture of the Premonstrated, as well as their economic and social role in the region before their decline. The precise location, at 1 L'Abbaye à Bucilly, allows to understand the spatial footprint of this heritage in the local landscape.
