Origin and history

The former Bourgeois Hospital in Toul, located in the city of Toul (Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est), has its origins in the Middle Ages. Founded as a hospital institution for the local bourgeois, it evolves over the centuries by integrating architectural elements of the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Its architecture reflects this temporal stratification, combining medieval structures and classical arrangements.

The site includes the former hotel of Pimodan, a hospital dependency, whose transformations run from the late 15th to the 18th century. Ranked a Historical Monument, the ensemble (numbers 6 and 6bis rue du Général-Gengoult) is protected by decree in 1995 for its buildings and their urban context. Sources also mention an alternative historical address (Saint-Gengoult Street), highlighting its anchoring in the ancient fabric of Toul.

The building illustrates the transition from medieval hospitals – places of charity and reception – to private residences or private hotels, a phenomenon common in French cities from the Renaissance. In Toul, a strategic city near Nancy, these buildings also bear witness to the social and economic dynamics of Lorraine, between bourgeois influence and religious heritage.
