Origin and history

The Hotel Montmien, also known as the former hotel of Clermont-Tonnerre, is a neo-classical building erected in 1787 by architect Jean-Baptiste Le Boursier for Nicolas-Marie Germain de Montmien, king's secretary-counsellor. He replaced a first hotel built in 1704 for Antoinette Potier de Nouvion, the future wife of Gaspard de Clermont-Tonnerre, whose name remains associated with the place. The building illustrates pre-Hhaussmannian Parisian urbanism, with a facade on a garden with a triangular pediment and an original cochère door.

In the 19th century, the piercing of Boulevard Saint-Germain (1855) removed the hotel garden, marking a major transformation of the area. In the 20th century, the building houses the Direct Contributions Directorate before being renovated (1995-1997) by an insurance company. Its facades, roofs and two stairwells were classified as Historic Monuments in 1992, highlighting their heritage value.

The architecture combines neo-classical elegance and traces of successive developments: balcony with consoles, rear triangular pediment, and cochère door vantals preserved. The site embodies the changes of Paris, between aristocratic heritage, administrative adaptations and contemporary conversion.
