Origin and history

The former Paris-Sud coke factory, located on horseback on Alfortville and Choisy-le-Roi in Val-de-Marne, was built in 1955 by architects Henri Marty and Louis Marty. This industrial complex, integrated with the Val-de-Seine activity park, illustrates the architectural principles of the 1950s: port structures, stilts and glass facades. Its administrative building houses a monumental mosaic commissioned in 1954 by Fernand Léger, representing the fire, made after death by his wife Nadia in 1955. A model of this work is preserved at the Fernand-Léger National Museum in Biot.

Three buildings remain after the site was dismantled: the administrative building (with the mosaic and a link gallery), the social building on stilts, and the garages-vestiaires. Their design reflects the architectural innovation of the period, such as side courts or landscape integration. These elements, as well as the laboratory, were listed as historic monuments on April 12, 2011, highlighting their heritage value.

The mosaic of Léger, now threatened, has generated mobilizations for its preservation, notably by Bernard Klein, former Deputy Director of EDF International. The site, owned by a private company, bears witness to the industrial history of France and the dialogue between art and architecture in the 20th century. GPS coordinates place the main address at 3 rue du Capitain-Alfred-Dreyfus in Alfortville, in an area marked by the conversion of industrial wasteland.
