Origin and history
The Old Louvre Hotel, located at 2bis-4 rue Notre-Dame in Nîmes, is an emblematic civil building from the 3rd quarter of the 18th century. Built in a Louis XVI style, it illustrates classical hotel architecture with a typical interior distribution: vestibule, large central staircase, lounges and stables. Its facade, adorned with pilasters and iron-plated balconies, reflects a desire to appear at the time.
The hotel has had several uses over the centuries. In the 20th century, it housed the Vox cinema and apartments, before being closed in 2003 and then damaged by a fire. Property of the SCCP Square of the Crown since 2011, it has been listed as a historic monument since 2011 for its preserved architecture, including its interiors and stairwell.
Ranked among the most beautiful examples of the Louis XVI style in Nîmes, the building is distinguished by its sociability spaces organized around the central staircase. Remissions and stables at the back complement this set, which is now almost entirely protected, with the exception of changes related to cinema. Its location at the crossroads of regional roads underlines its historical and urban importance.
