Origin and history
The former shops of the faienceries of Choisy-le-Roi are located at 18 rue de Paradis, in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, close to the old pen Saint-Lazare. The building, built between 1889 and 1892 by architects Georges Jacotin and Ernest Brunnarius, initially served as the headquarters of the Boulenger establishments. Its architecture is distinguished by interior ceramic decorations and a remarkable facade, typical of eclecticism of the late nineteenth century.
In 1978, it hosted the Affiche Museum, which was transformed into a Advertising Museum in 1982, before its transfer to the Louvre Palace in 1990. The façade on the street, the vestibule decorated with ceramics, the staircase with balusters and the exhibition hall are listed in the historical monuments by order of 6 October 1981. These protections highlight the heritage value of the decorative and architectural elements of the building.
From 2011 to 2021, the building houses Le Manoir de Paris, an attraction of haunted house type, illustrating a cultural and tourist re-use of the place. Since 2022, he has hosted Albert School, a business school, marking a new phase in his history. The site remains a testimony of the industrial and artistic heritage related to faience, while adapting to contemporary needs.
The location of the building, on the edge of the old Saint-Lazarus enclosure, also recalls the prison and religious history of the neighborhood. A citizen of the former Saint-Lazare prison, the site is part of an urban fabric rich in historical strata, where industrial, commercial and prison heritage intersect.
The interior ceramic decorations, covering a large part of the walls, reflect the influence of the faienceries of Choisy-le-Roi, whose building was the Parisian showroom. These elements, combined with the building body structure on street and courtyard, make it a notable example of the Belle Époque commercial architecture, combining functionality and aesthetics.
