The former tilery (Box ZB 29): classification by decree of 14 November 1983, decommissioning by decree of 19 July 2006

Origin and history

The former tilery of Trondes, located in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle (region Grand Est), was built in 1846, as attested to a date engraved on a stone of the oven. This facility was responding to a growing demand for tiles, while the roofing of thatched roofs was gradually disappearing. The site consisted of two distinct parts: one side of the road, the dwelling house, and the other, the industrial buildings, including a masonry oven and a large drying hall.

The tilery was classified as Historical Monument by decree of 14 November 1983, thus recognizing its heritage importance linked to local industrial history. However, due to its irreversible state of ruin, it was declassified by decree on 19 July 2006. The remains, although protected for a time, today bear witness to the technical and economic changes of the nineteenth century in the Lorraine countryside.

The site was organized functionally, with a clear separation between living and production spaces. The date of 1846, worn on the oven, marks the beginning of its activity, in a context where industrialization transformed the methods of construction. The tile was thus a transition to more sustainable materials, reflecting the needs of a changing society.

Despite its downgrading, the former tilery remains a marker of the industrial heritage of Trondes. Its history, although brief in terms of official protection, offers insight into regional economic dynamics and the adaptation of construction techniques in the mid-19th century.

The available coordinates (5137 La Tuilerie, 54570 Trondes) and its Insee code (54534) allow to situate it precisely in the local landscape, between collective memory and physical traces of an artisanal and industrial past.
