Origin and history

The façade of the Renaissance house, located in La Jarrie in Charente-Maritime, dates from the 16th century. This monument illustrates the civil architecture of the Renaissance in an area then marked by maritime exchanges and the development of the villages. Its style reflects the influence of Italian and local models, typical of the urban constructions of the period for wealthy families or notables.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 23 December 2022, this facade is fully protected, including its cadastral parcel (section AN, no. 590). Its official address, 4 rue de la Madeleine, corresponds to a central area of La Jarrie, close to the church. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated to be poor (note 5/10), suggesting uncertainties about its exact location in available sources.

In the Renaissance, bourgeois houses like this often served as residences for merchants, royal officers or enriched artisans. Their adorned facade symbolized the social status of the owner, while their location in the city facilitated commercial or administrative activities. In Poitou-Charentes (now New Aquitaine), this period coincides with an economic boom linked to salt, wine and Atlantic trade.
