Origin and history
The cliff of the Conte de Cénac-et-Saint-Julien is an emblematic monument of the Paleolithic period. Located in the commune of Cénac-et-Saint-Julien, this site bears witness to the ancient human presence in the region. The available data remain internal, but its archaeological importance is recognized in the context of prehistoric occupations in New Aquitaine.
Paleolithic, the period at which this site is associated, corresponds to a time when populations lived mainly hunting, gathering and fishing. Rock cliffs and shelters were often used as natural refuges or as seasonal dwellings. These sites provided weather protection and a strategic observation point for subsistence activities.
