Fanum de Cracouville: Gallo-Roman remains (Box D 52): by order of 29 June 1951

Origin and history

The fanum de Cracouville is a listed historical monument located in the commune of Old-Evreux (Eure, Normandy). This Gallo-Roman shrine, typical of Romanized Celtic places of worship, illustrates the religious importance of the region during ancient times. The remains, protected since 1951, offer an overview of local cultural practices between the first and fourth centuries.

The location of the site, although considered "passable" (note 5/10), makes it possible to identify its anchor in the territory of the Aulerques Eburovices, the Gaulish people settled around Evreux. Fanums, often associated with sources or crossroads, served as places of assembly and devotion. Their architecture, combining cella (salle de cult) and peripheral gallery, reflects the Roman influence on Celtic traditions.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 29 June 1951, the fanum of Cracouville is subject to legal protection covering the remains and their parcellar (cadastre D 52). No additional information is available on any recent excavations or facilities for the visit. The data come mainly from the Merimée database and Monumentum, without details of its current accessibility.
