Origin and history
The Ferme de l'Echaillon, located in Saint-Laurent-du-Pont in the Chartreuse Massif, is a historical monument dating from the 4th quarter of the 17th century. It perfectly illustrates the rural architecture of this period, with a structure set up around 1675, resting on monoxyl legs shifted inward. This type of construction reflects the techniques of the time and the adaptation to the geographical and climatic constraints of the region.
The farm was classified as Historic Monument by order of 25 September 2003. This protection covers the entire building and the land, including surrounding plots such as the right-of-way of the old bread oven, a masure, as well as meadows and a clearing. These elements reflect the traditional agricultural organization of the Chartreuse massif, where isolated farms played a central role in economic and social life.
The building is representative of the isolated rural habitat of Chartreuse, an area marked by a strong architectural and landscape identity. The construction techniques employed, such as the use of monoxyl wood, show a mastery of local resources and an adaptation to the practical needs of the inhabitants. The farm, still visible today, offers a valuable insight into rural life at the end of the seventeenth century in this part of the Alps.
