Origin and history
The pharmacy at 1 Place Royale in Clermont-Ferrand is a historic monument dating back to the late 19th century, between 1890 and 1900. It replaced an old hairdresser shop, marking a transition in the commercial use of this room. This building is distinguished by a structured front, combining ground floor and basement, integrating both an entrance to the building and an annex door leading to the pharmacy. The architectural composition is marked by a rigorous symmetry, with a central door framed by two windows, and side doors adorned with ironwork and surmounted by glass imposts.
The decoration of the front, both in ironwork and carved wood, is inspired by 18th century motifs, mixing curves, interlaces and grotesque masks. The basement, divided into three vertical sections, has a fixed central part in half circle adorned with radiating decorations, flanked by two curved windows. These decorative elements, carefully distributed, reflect craftsmanship and aesthetic concern characteristic of architectural eclecticism of the time.
Classified as a Historic Monument, the front and interior decoration of the pharmacy were protected by a registration order on 27 October 1986. This classification underscores the heritage value of this building, a witness to the commercial and architectural developments of Clermont-Ferrand at the hinge of the 19th and 20th centuries. The official address, 1 Place Royale, corresponds to a central place in the city, although GPS coordinates suggest an approximate location nearby, at 6 rue Massillon.
