Origin and history

Malard Pharmacy, located in Commercy in the Meuse department, is an emblematic example of Art Nouveau and Nancy School. Founded in the early twentieth century, it owes its name to its first two owners, Georges Malard and his son Pierre. In 1907, Eugène Vallin, renowned architect and cabinetmaker, transformed his front and interior into a characteristic style, blending natural wood, wrought iron and stylized plant motifs. This project is part of the artistic current born in Nancy in the late 19th century, about fifty kilometers from Commercy.

The front, structured around umbel rods, frames a window flanked by side doors protected by wrought iron grids. Inside, Charles Fridrich makes woodwork carved from medicinal plants, while Joseph Janin signs stained glass windows representing digitals and poppy. The wall panels pay tribute to scholars such as Pasteur, Lavoisier or Parmentier. Ranked a historic monument in 1998, the pharmacy retained its original layout, reflecting the alliance between science and art.

The history of the pharmacy is linked to that of his family owner: Georges Malard (1880–?), his son Pierre (1959–1987), then his grandson Philippe Flesch (1987–2015), before being taken over by Laurent Faltot in 2015. Its ranking in 1998 coincides with the centenary of the École de Nancy, highlighting its heritage importance. Located in 23 Place Charles-de-Gaulle, it is next to the old town hall and the Château de Commercy, strengthening its anchor in the urban landscape.

Protected elements include front, grilles, displays, mosaic flooring, cupboards, stained glass windows and an ice-cream dated 1907. This decor, almost unchanged since its creation, illustrates the lasting influence of Art Nouveau in Lorraine. The artisans involved — Vallin for architecture, Fridrich for woodwork and Janin for stained glass — marked the visual identity of the place, making it a unique testimony to the pharmaceutical and artistic history of the region.
