Origin and history
La ferme des Chanées is a farm located in Romenay, in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Built in the 17th and 18th centuries, it illustrates the typical rural architecture of the Bresse, with its adjoining buildings and its buckwheat fireplace, emblematic of this type of farm. The chimney, dated precisely from 1703, is a rare testimony of this vernacular heritage, still visible today.
The Saracen chimney of the farm of Chanées, accompanied by its square mitre in the shape of a Roman bell tower, was classified as historical monuments by order of 14 March 1925. This classification concerns only this architectural element, stressing its heritage importance. The farm is located in the hamlet of Chanées, between Romenay and the departmental limit with the Ain, accessible by the impasse of the Chanées.
This farm is part of a set of three farms of Saône-et-Loire with buckwheat fireplaces, the other two being the farm of Champ-Bressan and the farm of Saint-Romain, all located in the commune of Romenay. These chimneys, characteristic of the Bresse, served both as heating and cooking systems, reflecting the agricultural lifestyles and local construction techniques of the 17th and 18th centuries.
The location of the farm, close to the D975 and at the border with the department of Ain, makes it a point of interest both historical and geographical. Its exact address, 343 Impasse des Chanées, is referenced in the Mérimée base, confirming its anchoring in the French architectural heritage. The farm, although partially protected, remains a representative example of modern-day Bressan farms.
No information is available on opening to the public, visiting, or possible conversion into guest rooms or reception rooms. The sources consulted (Wikipedia, Monumentum) also do not mention historical characters related to its construction or history, focusing solely on its architectural features and classification.
The Chanées farm is part of a rural context marked by a dominant agricultural economy, where farms played a central role in community life. In Bresse, these farms were often organized around large buildings housing both inhabitants, animals and reserves, with architectural elements adapted to local needs, such as the buckwheat chimneys, designed to optimize heat diffusion.
