Origin and history

The Sabonnères farm, classified as a Historic Monument, is distinguished by its organization in two groups of buildings structured around two separate courtyards. The first set, with a residential vocation, includes a central body adorned with living rooms with refined gypsy decorations, framed by two wings. This system reflects the importance attached to aesthetics in the 18th century's affluent rural homes, while maintaining a practical function.

The second group of buildings, dedicated to agricultural activities, conserves all the infrastructure necessary for a rural operation of the period: stables, henhouses, clapier, and other outbuildings connected to housing by a canopy. This provision illustrates the autonomy of Occitan farms, where living and working spaces coexisted in harmony. Together, it evokes the rural way of life of the eighteenth century, marked by an agro-pastoral economy and a social hierarchy visible in architecture.

A notable historical episode is associated with this site: the Duke of Wellington s This anecdote, if proven, would highlight the strategic role of farms as resting or refuelling points in regional military conflicts.

Protected since 1985, the farm sees its facades, roofs and gypsum-decorated pieces listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments. This recognition highlights the heritage value of the building, both a witness to Occitan rural architecture and local history, from its agricultural role to its involvement in military events.
