Origin and history

The Feudal Motte du Chemin du Tom, located in Zuytpeene in the Northern Department, is a historical monument dating from the Middle Ages. This type of structure, characteristic of the period, was generally used as a defence point or seigneurial residence. Feudal mottes were often surrounded by ditches and surmounted by a wooden or stone tower, playing a key role in the territorial and military organization of the time.

In the Middle Ages, the Hauts-de-France region, then part of the county of Flanders, was marked by a feudal society in which local lords exercised strong power over rural populations. The mots like Zuytpeene illustrated this hierarchy, serving as a symbol of power while protecting the surrounding lands. Their implementation often reflected strategic issues related to communication channels or agricultural resources.
