Origin and history

La Ferme d'Ohis is a farm located in the commune of Ohis, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built in the 18th and 19th centuries, it illustrates the architectural model of Thiérache's open grass farms, a region known for its bocager landscapes and herding. Its materials, such as limestone, brick and blue stone, reflect the local resources available in the Hirson region, highlighting a construction adapted to its geographical and economic environment.

The farm was listed as historic monuments by order of 29 September 1992, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Although some buildings have disappeared and agricultural use has ceased, the whole remains well preserved, providing tangible evidence of the traditional farming practices of the Thiérache. The protected elements include the facades and roofs of the house, the entrance gate, and the barn, which are representative of the rural architecture of this period.

The Thierache, a region to which Ohis belongs, was historically marked by a rural economy focused on livestock and forage crops. Farms like Ohis played a central role in community life, serving both as a place of production and as a residence for peasant families. Their spatial organization and materials reflected local practical needs and know-how, while harmoniously integrating into the typical bocager landscape of the region.
