Origin and history
La Ferme de la Borie-Grande is a farm situated in the hamlet of Raulhac (Cantal), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 19th century, it is part of the outbuildings of the castle of Messilhac, attested to as early as 1538 under the property of Jean de Montamat. The ensemble illustrates the rural architecture of the period, with elements used as a carved stone of 1595, probably from the neighbouring castle.
The farm consists of a rectangular house dating from 1800, extended by a pig house, and a barn-stable built in 1811 on a pristine plot, dated 1834. The latter is home to a double stable, a dovecote and an isolated bread oven. The ensemble, representative of Cantalian farms, was listed as historic monuments in 1990 for its heritage and architectural interest.
The site preserves traces of re-use, as a Renaissance relief dated 1595, integrated over the east door of the stable. This detail, combined with the dates engraved on the buildings (1800, 1834), bears witness to the evolution of the estate and its links with the castle of Messilhac, whose history dates back to the sixteenth century. The farm thus embodies the continuity between the Ancien Régime and the 19th century rural.
Classified for its authenticity, the Borie-Grande offers a preserved example of Cantalian agro-pastoral architecture, where are mixed residential, agricultural and artisanal functions (bread oven). Its registration in 1990 underscores its documentary value for the study of operating systems and traditional construction techniques in Haute-Auvergne.
