Façades and roofs of the main building as well as the cheese cellar; dovecoier (Case AB 328) : inscription by order of 1 February 1988
Origin and history
La Ferme de la Ménagerie, located in Vineuil-Saint-Firmin in the department of Oise ( Hauts-de-France region), is a historical monument dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. This agricultural building, typical of the rural architecture of the period, is closely associated with the Domaine de Chantilly, whose park also extends over the neighbouring communes of Avrilly-Saint-Léonard and Vineuil-Saint-Firmin. Its history reflects the importance of farms and dependencies in the organization of major aristocratic domains under the Old Regime.
The Ferme de la Ménagerie was partially protected by an order of 1 February 1988, which specifically concerns the facades and roofs of the main building, as well as the cheese cellar and pigeon house. These architectural elements bear witness to the agricultural and storage activities carried out there, such as the production of wheat and the breeding of pigeons, which were common in farms of this period. The site is now located precisely at the address 4 Allée de la Ménagerie, and its geographical location is considered very satisfactory (note of 8/10).
Integrated with the heritage of the Domaine de Chantilly, Ferme de la Ménagerie illustrates the link between large seigneurial estates and surrounding farms. These farms were often used to supply noble homes with fresh produce, while playing an economic and social role for local people. Their preservation offers a concrete testimony of rural life and agricultural practices of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Picardie.
