Origin and history

Than Farm, also known as the Old Bell Tower Farm, is an iconic building located in Bretteville-sur-Odon, Calvados department. Dating from the 17th and 19th centuries, it illustrates the architecture of the large Norman farms. It is located at No. 61 of the road of Brittany, near the former church of Notre-Dame and the estate of Baronnie, on the banks of the Petit Odon. Its history reflects the evolution of agricultural practices and local urban planning.

The farm continued its agricultural activity until the end of the 20th century, marketing local products. In 2004, its facades, roofs, houses, stables, and the bridge and banks of the Petit Odon were listed as historical monuments. In the 2000s, the site was converted into 42 high-end apartments, carefully preserving its exterior appearance to maintain its architectural heritage.

The complex is a testament to the economic and social transformations of Normandy, moving from a traditional farm to a modern place of residence. Its inscription in historical monuments underlines its importance in the local heritage, while offering an example of a successful rehabilitation of a historic building.
