Origin and history
The farm of Villefontaine is a former fortified house built in the 16th century, located in the delegated commune of Marchais-en-Brie, within Dhuys-et-Morin-en-Brie (Aisne). This monument is distinguished by its defensive architecture, including a housing body with four round towers, as well as murderers adapted to the arquebus. It is part of a quadrangular complex comprising stone agricultural buildings and wooden frames, preserved in their original state, including interiors.
The farm was historically dependent on the seigneury of Montmirail, emphasizing its role in the local feudal network. In 2007, it was listed as historic monuments, protecting the entire fortified house, its agricultural buildings (excluding modern parts), its courtyard, its carriageway and pedestrian doors, as well as two plots dedicated to a vegetable garden. Its exceptional state of conservation makes it a rare testimony to the fortified rural architecture of the Renaissance.
Located at 4 Rue du Château in Marchais-en-Brie, the farm is now recognized for its heritage interest, combining agricultural and defensive functions. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its importance in the historical landscape of Aisne and Hauts-de-France, while emphasizing its architectural value and its link to the territory of Montmirail.
