Origin and history
The Corboulo Farm is a former farm located in the hamlet of the same name, about 1.2 km south of the centre of Saint-Aignan, in Morbihan. Built in 1793, it is distinguished by its schist and sandstone architecture, with a rectangular plan of 26 × 7 meters, spread over three levels, including a top. A second house, separated from the barn by a palis partition, extends the main building.
The farm was built for Yves Guillome and his wife Marie Cognan, a couple of peasants whose social success is reflected in the careful treatment of materials and the importance of the house. The inscription engraved on the building, "F: F: BY YVES GUILLOME AND MARIE COGNANF 1793", as well as the sundial on the chimney stump, testify to their easy status for the revolutionary era. The facades, roofs and wells were listed as historical monuments by order of 17 July 1987.
The architecture of the farm reflects a functional organization, with a staircase rejected in the stable to free the large lower rooms of the house. This provision could suggest a craft activity, such as weaving, although this is not explicitly confirmed. The contrast between the shale used for the walls and the sandstone of the bays, as well as the presence of skylights, underline the care taken to this rural construction.
The site is located in a historical context marked by the French Revolution, during which the construction of such a farm, both functional and aesthetic, illustrates the diversity of social situations in Brittany. The partial classification of the monument in 1987 preserved this example of 18th century rural habitat, representative of the architectural and social evolution of the region.
