Origin and history

The Fortification à mote de Peray is a historical monument located in the commune of Peray, in the department of Sarthe, in the Pays de la Loire region. This type of defensive structure, characteristic of the Middle Ages, consists of a central terrace surrounded by a ditch, as well as a lowyard bounded by a talute enclosure and its own ditch. The protected elements include all of these developments, as well as the soils of the parcels concerned, as specified in the Registration Order of 9 May 2023.

Fortifications were commonly built between the 10th and 12th centuries in Europe, serving as local defence points and symbols of seigneurial power. In regions such as the Pays de la Loire, these structures played a key role in the territorial organisation and protection of rural populations. They were often associated with agricultural and artisanal activities, reflecting a feudal society where land security and control were paramount.

This monument, now owned by the municipality of Peray, bears witness to this pivotal period of French medieval history.
