Origin and history
The Ecotated Cross of Pleumeur-Bodou is a monumental cross located in Place de l'Église, in the municipality of Pleumeur-Bodou, Brittany. Dated from 1621 thanks to an inscription on its base, it is decorated with nine buttons on each edge and presents sculptures representing Christ, a chalice and the host. Its architectural style, with cut strips and tenon-shaped ends, is characteristic of the Breton crosses of that time. Originally, it was located in the vicinity before being moved behind the dead monument.
The cross was inscribed as historical monuments by order of 7 October 1964. This ranking demonstrates its heritage and artistic importance, particularly for its religious iconography and its typical bill of the first quarter of the seventeenth century. It is now owned by the municipality of Pleumeur-Bodou and remains an emblematic part of the local heritage.
The ecotized crosses, like Pleumeur-Bodou's, played a central role in the religious and social life of Breton communities in the 17th century. They served as spiritual landmarks, gathering places for processions, and often marked sacred spaces or important crossroads. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Catholic Church in the region, particularly strong after the Counter-Reform.
The current location of the cross, the place of the Church, strengthens its link with the religious heritage of the commune. Although displaced, it retains a strong symbolic value for residents and visitors, illustrating the art and devotion of modern times in Brittany. Its state of conservation and its protection as a historical monument make it possible to perpetuate this testimony of the past.
