Origin and history
The Rappel Tower, located in the commune of Marat (Puy-de-Dôme), is a 15th century, isolated circular dungeon. This fortified monument, typical of medieval defensive architecture, is distinguished by its independent structure and its three raised floors above a ground floor. The exterior openings, protected by grids, and the mâchicoulis adorned with accolades testify to its defensive role. The original crenelage, now extinct, initially completed this set.
The building or the deep overhaul of the tower dates back to 1429, when Bertrand de la Tour, lord of Olliergues, authorized Pierre de la Tour to fortify his castle. This permission probably marked the beginning of the work, the coronation of which was completed before the end of the 15th century. The tower, classified as a historical monument in 1963, illustrates the tensions and protection needs characteristic of this period in Auvergne.
Architecturally, the tower features remarkable defensive elements: three narrow chamfered slits illuminating the interior staircase, and a row of intact mâchicoulis. These details, combined with his circular plan, reflect both Romanesque influences and military adaptations of the time. The exterior staircase, visible on old photographs but now gone, strengthened its functional and strategic character.
