Origin and history

The Samatan Fountain, listed as a Historic Monument, is a 19th century architectural testimony linked to the local brick industry. Its neo-classical style is distinguished by flat corinthian pilasters and niches adorned with mascarons, where water flows. The decorative details include foliage volutes and arches in full hanger, while a domed dome with sprigs crown together. The building rests on a circular brick basin, typical of the achievements of the period.

The inclusion of this fountain in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 9 February 1993 underlines its heritage importance. It also reflects 19th century craft and aesthetic techniques, where public fountains played a central role in everyday life, combining utility and urban beautification. Its location on the eponymous square of Samatan, in the Gers, makes it a historical and cultural landmark for the municipality.

The protected elements include the fountain itself, located in the public domain and not cadastral. The accuracy of its location is assessed as fair (note 5/10), and its official address, 13 Place de la Fontaine, confirms its anchoring in the city centre. Owned by the municipality, it embodies both the material heritage and the industrial heritage of the Occitanie region, once marked by the production of bricks and ceramics.
