Origin and history
The Folie d'Antony designates the remains of an ancient aristocratic property, composed of commons and a garden pavilion built between 1732 and 1753, during the second quarter of the eighteenth century. These buildings may have been built for Gromaire de la Bapmmeraye, although this assignment is based on historical works without definitive proof. The gate and facade of the pavilion bear monograms probably linked to the children of the Marquis de La Croux de Castries, owner of the premises between 1753 (or 1759) and 1782. The original master house was demolished around 1815, marking the end of this first period.
In the 19th century, a new mansion called "Château Saran" was erected around 1880 on the site. Acquired by the city of Antony in 1938, it housed a secular patronage before being converted into a municipal music conservatory, its present function. Only the gate on street with its vantals has been protected under the Historical Monuments since a decree of 7 August 1974, testifying to the heritage importance of the remaining elements.
The site illustrates the evolution of aristocratic properties in Île-de-France, from private residences to public facilities. Its history reflects the social and urban transformations of Antony, from the Enlightenment to the contemporary era, with particular attention to the partial preservation of its architectural heritage.
