Origin and history
La Fontaine aux Fées, located in Langres, Haute-Marne department, Grand-Est region, is a historical monument listed by order on 23 December 1925. This site is also a protected natural area, classified as a Nature Zone of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest (ZNIEFF) type I under regional number 10320000. Its environment is marked by dry lawns and box moors on limestone soils dating from the Middle Jurassic (about 165 million years).
The park is home to a remarkable biodiversity, including protected species such as the Birth Alyte, Salamandre, and various tritons, as well as birds such as the Lulu Alouette and the Yellow Sparrow. The hard limestone extracted on site has historically been used to build local buildings. A discovery trail and sports facilities have been developed to enhance this natural and historic site.
Although the name Fountain aux Fées evokes legends, no explicit mention of mythological narratives or historical characters related to this monument is available from the sources consulted.
