Origin and history

The Carnot Fountain of La Ferté-Bernard originated in a petition dated 1477, although the current church dates mainly from the seventeenth century. According to the archives, its construction at Robert Hoyau's expense in 1651 marks a key step in its history, although this date remains uncertain. This monument, located in Carnot Square, embodies the evolution of urban hydraulic infrastructures between Renaissance and modern times.

The building has been included in the inventory of Historic Monuments since 11 September 1989 under the reference Fountain Carnot (Box D 119). Owned by the municipality of La Ferté-Bernard (code Insee 72132), it illustrates the importance of public water points in medieval and classical cities. Its location, now noted as satisfactory a priori (level 6/10), reflects its anchoring in the historical urban fabric.

Available sources, including Monumentum and Merimée data, highlight its heritage role in the Sarthe department in the Pays de la Loire region. Although architectural details are not specified, its official inscription and its persistence until the contemporary era make it a witness to the social and technical practices of its time.
