Fountain of the Hospital: registration by decree of 29 September 1928
Origin and history
The Fountain of the Hospital of Pernes-les-Fontaines is an emblematic monument of a city renowned for its many fountains. Although Pernes-les-Fontaines is not a classic spa town, it has about 40 fountains, some dating back to the 15th century. The first official records of these fountains date back to that time, with municipal decisions kept in the archives, such as that of 1596 forbidding washing laundry to preserve the cleanliness of the water intended for livestock.
In the 17th century, the discovery of a source near the chapel Saint-Roch led to the construction of four new fountains, reflecting the population's growing enthusiasm for these works. This interest continued until the 20th century, when the city officially added "Les-Fontaines" to its name in 1936. The Fountain of the Hospital, for its part, was listed as a historic monument by decree of 29 September 1928, highlighting its heritage importance.
The fountains of Pernes-les-Fontaines played a central role in everyday life, serving both as water points for the inhabitants and the cattle, and as symbols of local identity. Their preservation reflects the municipality's commitment to this unique hydraulic heritage in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
