Origin and history

The Fountain of Moirans-en-Montagne City Hall was designed as part of a water improvement campaign, launched in 1880. Initially, architect Louis Rousseau proposed an octagonal fountain project surmounted by a bust of the Republic, but the elected municipal officials opted for a more monumental work. This choice reflected a desire for prestige and modernization for the city, then in the midst of urban transformation.

The construction of the fountain was completed in 1884. It consists of a quadrilobed monolithic basin, adorned with four cast iron mascarons, and a fluted column in Molinges brocade. The capital, carrying the city's weapons, supports a bust of the Republic inspired by a model of Angelo Francia, probably melted by the Durenne foundry. This monument, both utilitarian and symbolic, embodies republican values and the development of public infrastructure under the Third Republic.

Ranked among the Historical Monuments by order of 19 September 2007, the fountain is now fully protected. It reflects the know-how of local artisans, such as architect Louis Rousseau and sculptor Angelo Francia, as well as the importance attached to the beautification of public spaces at the end of the 19th century. Its location on Place R. Monnier, in the heart of Moirans-en-Montagne, makes it a central element of the communal heritage.
